NCME Hosts STEM Forum

On March 26, 2007, a panel of leaders representing education, industry and state government gathered at Sinclair Community College for a forum discussing the recommendations of Ohio’s Science and Mathematics Education Policy Advisory Council (SAMEPAC) for improving P-16 science, technology, engineering , and math (STEM) education. Created by the Ohio Board of Regents, the Ohio Department of Education and the Governor’s Office, SAMEPAC was directed to recommend changes in public policy and educational practices to improve STEM opportunities.

Dr. Karen Holborrk, President of Ohio State University gave the keynote address, and the panelists were Heinz Bulmahn, Vice Provost for Research and Dean of the Graduate College, Bowling green State University; David Burns, Executive Director, Secondary Education and Workforce Development, Ohio Department of Education; Herbert Clemens, Mathematics Professor, Ohio State University; and Gabrielle Gordon, Coordinator, SAMEPAC. The audience included a representation from a wide variety of academic, government, and professional institutions at all levels.

SAMEPAC worked for two years to develop a plan for Ohio to be a leader in the innovation-based global economy and its citizens to have the high-level knowledge and skills in science and mathematics they will need for success. The forum, hosted by Sinclair Community College’s Engineering and Industrial Technologies Division, the Ohio Department of Education, Project Lead the Way Ohio, and Ford PAS Ohio, extended the conversation among statewide stakeholders and encouraged cooperative implementation of the SAMEPAC recommendations, which had been announced February 19, 2007.

Who Should Attend

Two-Year Engineering Technology Faculty

How You Benefit

Connects participants with experts in faculty development and the learning sciences, as well as in content areas.

Provides the opportunity to participate in a professional development activity that allows faculty to practice research methods under the direction of a research mentor.

Fosters the formation of "communities of practice" with the goal of expanding the boundaries of engineering technology education research.

Commitment and Cost

The Spring 2007 Pre-Workshop webinars are free, and attendance is required.

For the July 22-26, 2007 workshop, room and board are provided. Participants are responsible for travel costs, as well as the cost of optional additional recreational activities at the Cataloochee Ranch. Participants are welcome to bring their families and other guests, but all costs for additional guests are the responsibility of the participant.

In addition, participants are required to complete a research project by the end of the 2007-2008 academic year, and present their results in a research paper at either ASEE in June 2008 or NSF's ATE-PI Conference in October 2008. On completion of these requirements, a $1000 stipend will be paid.
