NCME to Participate in NAM Dream It Do It Campaign

The National Center for Manufacturing Education (NCME) and several other Advanced Technological Education (ATE) centers funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) are working closely with the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) to support NAM’s Dream It Do It careers campaign.

The goal of the Dream It Do It campaign is to guide young adults to careers in today’s various manufacturing sectors. NAM, the nation’s largest industrial trade association, started to get feedback that US manufacturers were having trouble attracting employees to meet the demands of modern high-tech manufacturing. NAM conducted extensive research and found that in addition to the shortage of skilled workers, manufacturing careers have an outdated image with negative stereotypes of factory jobs that has kept young people from pursuing careers in manufacturing.

The NSF-ATE centers representing the manufacturing industry will be joining other national partners of the Dream It Do It campaign, such as Monster.com, the American Association of Community Colleges, and the College Board. Financial support of $1.6 million is being provided by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, with additional support coming from NAM members.

Currently being piloted in the Kansas City region, the initiative seeks to attract young adults to the manufacturing industry by providing them with a new, up-to-date vision of the careers available in manufacturing. According to John Engler, President of NAM:

Manufacturing jobs pay on average $54,000 in total compensation—about 20 percent higher than the national average wage—a statistic that will be stressed in the awareness part of our campaign through print, outdoor, in-theater, radio and online advertising, student brochures, and direct mail. We also have created a website (www.dreamit-doit.com) targeting the 18-26 age group, which will offer streaming video, links to job training and educational opportunities, and career advice—with special offers for employers who post jobs and internships through Monster.

For more information about how you or your company or academic institution can participate in Dream It Do It, go to the website at www.dreamit-doit.com, or email Phyllis Eisen, Vice President of NAM’s Manufacturing Institute or call her at (202) 637-3011.
