Competitions for Students
American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers Student Design
Competition
Through involvement in the competition, students will gain practical experience
in the design of drivetrain systems, tractor performance, manufacturing
processes, analysis of tractive forces, weight transfer and strength of
materials. In addition, they will also develop skills in communication,
leadership, teamwork, fundraising and test & development.
ASEE
Model Design Competition
This event is a design/build robotics competition open to all freshmen
and sophomore engineering and engineering technology students at both
2-year and 4-year colleges. It is held each year as part of the ASEE (American
Society for Engineering Education) Annual Conference.
ASME
Student Design Competition
This competition, sponsored by the ASME Center for Professional Development,
Practice & Ethics and the ASME Knowledge and Community Sector,
requires individuals or teams of up to four student members design,
construct and operate a prototype meeting the requirements of a problem
statement.
BattleBots
IQ
BattleBots IQ (BBIQ) is an educational program
created by the producers of the wildly successful
BattleBots television series. Check out what you
get with the BattleBots IQ High School Curriculum.
Donald
W. Fogarty International Student Paper Competition
This competition actively encourages the professional development of students
interested in the field of operations management. Full-time or part-time
undergraduate and graduate students submit original, relevant, and timely
research papers on topics related to the field of operations management
including inventory management, manufacturing processes, systems &
technologies, and more.
First
Lego League (FLL)
FLL is a result of an exciting alliance between FIRST and the LEGO Company.
Guided by adult mentors and their own imaginations, FLL students solve
real-world engineering challenges, develop important life skills, and
learn to make positive contributions to society.
Future
City
The mission of the National Engineers Week Future City
Competition is to provide a fun and exciting educational engineering program
for seventh and eighth grade students that combines a stimulating engineering
challenge with a "hands-on" application to present their vision
of a city of the future.
This resource is recommended by the SME-EF.
Intel
Science Talent Search
For more than 60 years, this competition—often referred to as the
"junior Nobel Prize"—has provided an incentive and an
arena for U.S. high school seniors to complete an original research project,
have it recognized by a national jury of highly regarded professional
scientists, and awarded with a scholarship.
International
Aluminum Extrusion Design Competition
The goal of the International Aluminum Extrusion
Design Competition is to promote the understanding
and use of extruded aluminum profiles, as well
as to highlight innovations and recognize excellence
in aluminum extrusion design.
JWOD/JETS
National Engineering Design Challenge (NEDC)
The JWOD/JETS National Engineering Design Challenge is a real world
challenge, for high school students in grades 9-12, to help people with
disabilities enter or advance in the workplace.
Lean
Student Paper Competition
The Lean Student Paper Competition recognizes outstanding lean research
and practices papers. Papers should demonstrate or describe the use of
techniques such as simulation, lean principle implementation, alternative
designs, kaizen implementation, or another lean technique.
2006-2007
Material Handling Student Design Competition
This competition, now in its twelfth year, provides an opportunity for
you to offer a five-week team project for your class in the fall, winter
or spring semester/quarter.
National
Robotics Challenge
The National Robotics Challenge contests are open to students in 6th grade
through graduate school. This not only allows your students to continue
with robotics as they move on, but it also let's them meet students at
the next level that will inspire and encourage them. This
resource is recommended by the SME-EF.
PACE
PACE provides student competitions as part of its commitment to encourage
students to embrace game-changing product development and analysis processes.
These competitions are easily integrated into the existing curricula (any
CAD/CAM/CAE course with a project). Contact Deborah Peak for more information.
Robotics
First
Our mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders,
by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science,
engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster
well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication
and leadership.
Rube
Goldberg Machine Contest
The Rube Goldberg Machine Contest (RGMC) brings the ideas of Pulitzer
Prize-winning artist Rube Goldberg's "invention" cartoons to
life. This Olympics of Complexity is designed to pull students away from
conventional problem-solving and push them into the endless chaos of imagination
and intuitive thought. To be specific, groups are given an elementary
challenge: something as simple as peeling an apple, sharpening a pencil,
or putting toothpaste on a toothbrush. But instead of just "solving"
the problem, students have to make the solution as complicated and as
convoluted as possible. In fact, the more steps - there's a minimum of
twenty - the better the Rube Goldberg Machine. An assemblage of ordinary
objects, mechanical gadgets, and the oddest odds and ends are linked together
and somehow get to the desired goal.
Siemens
Foundation
Through the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology, students
have an opportunity to achieve national recognition for science research
projects that they complete in high school.
SkillsUSA
Championships
The SkillsUSA Championships is the showcase for
the best career and technical students in the
nation. Contests begin locally and continue through
the state and national levels. Contest descriptions
